Why are the Kiryung Electronics Company workers on a fasting strike?

Three years ago there were as many as 290 irregular workers out of the total 300 workers in Kiryung Electronic Company. A few days before the irregular workers were due to become regular workers after working for six months, sixty workers were fired on December 2005. These irregular workers were paid the monthly salary of 641,850 Won (approximately US$650), only 10 Won above the minimum wage in 2005. The wage was less than 1,000,000 Won (US$1,000) even though they worked 80 hours a week including night shift and overtime work.

The workers anticipated the management’s plan to terminate many of them before their temporary status expired and, concerned about their employment status with the company, organized a labor union in July 2005. One hundred eighty workers (180) joined the labor union from among the remaining 205 workers. However, even though they were unionized, all labor union members were dismissed, without being given a written notice of termination; they received only a text message through SMS.

The labor union’s request to the company was that they become regular workers, be given a regular salary increment, and have direct employment with the company instead of through labor contractors. The Ministry of Labor and the Public Prosecutor's Office agreed with the labor union's demand but Kiryung Electronics Company disregarded the government offices’ injunction. The company paid only 5,000,000 Won (US$5,000) penalty for violating the labor law.

As of the present, 35 workers are continuing their just demand for regular employment in the company. Many of the workers are women who have moved to new jobs; however, they are still irregular workers in these other companies. The companies that derive super-profits out of the sweat and blood of workers do not know the struggle the workers have been through and the anxiety of irregular workers. To be an irregular worker in Kiryung Electronics Company is the same as being a slave. A member of the labor union, Yoon Jong-Hee, said, "Since we began our strike, our former fellow workers come back to us and join in our struggle, especially when they switch from one irregular job to another. There are no regular workers in the Kuro Industrial Complex, only irregular workers."

After all, the irregular workers’ struggle against the deplorable treatment from Kiryung Electronics Company is not just their own but is the struggle of all irregular workers in the Kuro Industrial Complex. According to the labor union, more than 90% of workers in the Kuro Industrial Complex are irregular.
