Joint Ecumenical Worship [107th PROK General Assembly]

On September 18, a joint 107th General Assembly Ecumenical Worship was held at PCK Yeongdong Church with the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK), the Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK), and overseas church partners. This was the first time for PROK and PCK to hold a joint ecumenical worship before their general assemblies. It was a meaningful worship that stood for, “Unity and harmony of the church.”

When delivering the sermon, Rev. Lee Soon Chang, vice-moderator of PCK, said, “We thank God to be able to gather, to praise, and to confess the same Jesus Christ as the Savior.”

During the worship, WCC Central Committee Member Rev. Kim Seo Young and PCK Youth Representative of WCC assistant pastor Cho Eun Ah read the Constantinople Nicene Creed together. The Korean Christian Church in Japan (KCCJ) Moderator Rev. Yoichi Nakae shared the prayer, the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia (BCCM) Moderator Rev. James Wong read the scripture, and Seoul Hyangrin Church’s traditional orchestra “Yehyang” led the praise.

PROK Moderator Rev. Kim Eun Kyung preached about the “Harmonious Pilgrimage to Unity.” She expressed that, “in today’s world of militarists, huge financial corporations, military complexes, and the endless destruction of the ecosystem, we must confess that we, along with all the living species in the world, are born from God. With this conviction, we must move forward.” She also spoke of how, “consistency is God’s gift. Just as Christ and God are one, we must become one with Christ and unite with God.” And concluded with encouragement to, “declare God’s harmony in the broken and divided world that has also been hurt by COVID-19. With love for each other, we must invite the world’s people to the path of pilgrimage in reconciliation and unity.”

After the message, the Presbyterian Church (USA) Director of Ecclesial and Ecumenical Ministries Dr. Dianna Wright led the “Prayer for a Suffering World.” The Church of Christ in Thailand (CCT) Moderator Rev. Thawesak Mahachavaroj led the benediction. Greetings were also shared by PCK General Secretary Kim Bo Hyun, PROK General Secretary Kim Chang Ju, and PCK Yeongdong Church Senior Pastor Rev. Kim Joo Yong.

After the ecumenical worship, a welcome reception and dinner were held. During this time, all those in attendance were introduced.

The joint ecumenical worship was attended by delegates from the Church of Scotland (COS), the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Korean Christian Church in Japan (KCCJ), the Church of Christ in Thailand (CCT), the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren (ECCB), the National Caucus of Korean Presbyterian Churches (NCKPC), the Korean Presbyterian Church Abroad (KPCA), and 17 delegates from the  church partners. In addition, about 200 people attended the worship, including PCK General Assembly executive members, PROK General Assembly executive members, ecumenical committee members, missionaries, and Yeondong Church members.

This general assembly’s ecumenical worship drew much interest. In previous years, the ecumenical worship was held separately during the general assemblies of the PROK and PCK. However, this year, to shorten the assembly days and provide enough time for international guests, the ecumenical worship was held a week before the start of the assemblies. In addition, the PROK held a joint ecumenical worship with the PCK, which separated in 1953, to work towards reviving the meaning of ecumenical worship and to seek unity and harmony. With the conclusion of this joint worship service, the PROK looks forward to continuing to work with the PCK in the future.
